About the role:

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team at Unit21. We process a high volume of data (up to a billion records/day) formed in unique patterns for each customer that need to be accessed and analyzed in a performant manner. The key problems we face on a day-to-day basis are performance, reliability, and flexibility at scale, and the ideal candidate will have experience with discovering and implementing practical, innovative solutions.

As a core contributor on our Data Ingestion & Management (DIM) team, you’ll have the mission of ensuring we maintain minimal distance from customer’s data schema to ours, make data ingestion & mapping simple, enriching the quality of our data for detection modeling and fraud investigation, and ensuring it all happens in an efficient manner. This is a data platform team, and the work empowers and impacts every other EPD team.

Recent projects have run along the lines of:

• Researching ways to enrich IP Address data to fuel risk assessment
• Analyzing Spark jobs & data schema to identify easy efficiency gains or cost reduction
• Ingesting compromised data from the dark web and exploring ways to match against our customer’s users

Our engineering team is low process and high autonomy - we emphasize product decision-making and prioritization by folks who own the work. As a result, you’ll be expected to get familiar with how the product works, get into the mindset of the customer, and influence the decisions made regarding what you build. Additionally, you’ll have a significant say in what you work on, and will be expected to prioritize the most meaningful work for the company. What you’ll be doing:

• Implement customer facing ingestion-focused features in the Unit21 backend system, working with RESTful APIs and databases
• Work with other engineers to design scalable systems and services from the ground up with well-defined interfaces
• When on-call, monitor production system, react to and resolve incidents
• Review other engineers’ code and provide feedback
• Communicate with product managers, sometimes customers to clarify requirements and provide solutions

What we’re looking for:

• 4+ Years of experience in one or more object-oriented languages, such as Python, Java, Scala, C#, etc.
• Experience in developing and owning end-to-end APIs, data-flows, and infrastructure for consumer or enterprise products
• Proficiency in one or more RDBMS, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL, etc.
• Familiarity with one or more NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Neo4j, Elasticsearch, Cassandra, etc
• Proficiency with data modeling and performant data access strategies
• Proficiency with API design and optimization
• Experience in rotational on call schedule to support P0 issues
• Hustle, curiosity, humility

Bonus Points:

• Professional experience with some or all of our stack: PostgreSQL, Python, Elasticsearch, Delta Lake, AWS, Terraform, React
• Experience with making product decisions
• Experience with autonomous, self-directed work
• Strong communication skills
• Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields

Compensation:

The standard base pay range for this role is $157,00.00 - $205,000.00 Annually. This base pay range does not include variable compensation including potential commissions, bonuses or other financial or equity incentives.
