WHAT YOU WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED IN

Our vision for Data is to enable everyone in the company to be owners of performance and scientific in their approach to learning from data and for data directly to be used to enhance our product experience.

The Analytics Lead should create the space for others to succeed whilst maintaining 50/50 hands-on analytics capability to flexibly support the team and help build scientific capacity within the organization, depending on business needs and team growth. They might partner across multiple domains as required - such as Partnerships, Finance, Growth, Product, Operations and Customer Experience, maintaining broad knowledge to enable their team to dive deep into a particular area.

As one of the first hires in the data team, reporting into the Chief Operations Officer, you will have the opportunity to lay the foundations for future success and to scale with the organization on this journey. We don’t have any single source of truth data models built in Snowflake yet, so you will need to get your hands dirty in the first few months, be involved in the SQL from the raw data layer in Snowflake, and be working with Google Sheets/Excel. You will be integral in moving forwards on this and pushing us to creating a single source of truth layer in Snowflake.

As an early-stage business, you can expect your role to develop over time. However, some of the types of things you could be getting involved in are:

  • Driving our Data Creation principles - Work with system of record owners and software engineers on how we create data for the first time to ensure that we have some level of guidance and governance as to what ‘good looks like’ at source.
  • Building out the analytics single source of truth - Firstly by making a decision on what tools should be used for what purpose. Then in the future moving upstream and building dbt models based on design guidelines which codify the conventions we use to make our data easy to use for analysis and representative of the real world Scan ecosystem. The models should be well tested and documented to ensure they can aid with building trust and reliability.
  • Owning the data platform - Define the vision, build, and own the data platform (Snowflake, Fivetran, dbt Cloud, Tableau, Zoho Analytics, Geckoboard) with consideration for other tooling in the wider ecosystem (Heap, Coefficient), with a keen eye on integration, performance, costing, and future capabilities. You will be supported by the VP Engineering with this effort.
  • Fostering high performance - Continuously move the Data & Analytics team towards high performance by leading your data peers and the wider organization on issues affecting impact or process/tooling/data challenges hindering the progress of maturity of data scaling and our data culture.
  • Coaching and Mentoring - Help any other data professionals in your team and the wider business make stretch improvements in their craft skills in how they approach analytically thinking about and working with data. Be the leader that everyone looks to for tips on how to improve their practices with data and think scientifically.

THE TOP 5 THINGS WE WANT YOU TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR FIRST YEAR ARE

Lead the transformation of Scan into an Insights and Analytics-led organisation

  • Successfully guide Scan’s journey to become a leader in successfully deploying insights and analytics across our business, from the medicals scans we supply, the partnerships we foster, to the growth campaigns we run. Collaborate with business leaders to integrate data and scientific thinking as core elements in decision-making processes across domains.
  • Success will be measured by the implementation of key data initiatives and their impact on our company OKRs.

Create shared focus and align capacity to where it’s needed.

  • Work closely with the Scan leadership team to identify and address gaps in insights and analytics capabilities. Propose and implement changes to roles or create new positions to ensure comprehensive coverage of these areas.
  • Ensure successful hiring for these roles, with success measured by the attainment of company objectives and the retention rate of new hires, specifically their 12-month anniversary milestone being achieved.

Create the ideal environment for high performance.

  • Continuously surface any challenges faced by the Data & Analytics team, and lead initiatives to overcome them. Surface issues affecting team motivation and impact and implementing necessary changes to our regular rhythms on a monthly basis.
  • Success will be measured by the absence of recurring themes for improvement in data-wide retros.

Make Scan the best place for your team to grow and thrive.

  • Actively support the personal and professional development of the Data & Analytics team members. Facilitate opportunities for team members to advance their skills and knowledge as data professionals.
  • Success in this area will be measured by the team’s growth and achievements in their respective fields.

Lead through activation of others

  • Primarily lead by coaching, mentoring, supporting and activating through others, but unblock the team when they hit complex analytical barriers. Dive in to clarify and simplify or otherwise advise on a first move to help them get going (and then get better) so they can continue to own their work autonomously and grow.
  • Success will be measured in the number of consecutive monthly retros where the team has been blocked due to a lack of clarity and/or formalisation around the problems they need to solve.

WHAT YOU MIGHT BRING TO THE TABLE:

  • Expertise with SQL query development and optimization (e.g. parsing JSON files, complex joins, complex calculations using CTEs, query planners etc) in a cloud-based environment (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), preferably with dbt. Python experience is a bonus.
  • Experienced with Git. Lives by the PR/merge request. Sets the standard for forking branches, using version control, pushes early and often and prunes at the end of each development lifecycle.
  • Demonstrable experience of producing reliable and trusted data, reporting or analytics products that automates self-service and learning to support recurring needs, ideally within Tableau.
  • Data & Analytics leadership at a startup. You will build, develop and support a team, creating the optimal space for others to succeed. Can guide with sufficient knowledge and appropriate questions, whilst trusting analysts and analytics engineers to achieve their desired outcomes. Focused on longer term success, planning strategically and enhancing how we add value.
  • Confident with and energized by building strong partnerships across technical and business peers. Enjoys collaborating with other leaders to maximize value and reduce blockers. Able to influence stakeholders and create win-win situations which build trust and strong long term relationships.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to thrive in a high ambiguity, fast paced environment that gives you the ownership and freedom to succeed - an ability to self organize around delivering to objectives and major milestones.
