WHAT YOU WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED IN
Our vision for Data is to enable everyone in the company to be owners of performance and scientific in their approach to learning from data and for data directly to be used to enhance our product experience.
Data Analysts are the people who make self-service learning possible. They work with people to understand and, to begin with, directly assist with their learning needs. Over time, as both the needs mature and the analysts’ understanding of how to address them, they build their understanding into curated data products that enable learnings to be generated without the direct support of data professionals. It’s a role where mastery in metric setting, data visualization, product management and partnering come together to build and maintain curated data products that facilitate team learning, execution and learning again within their daily rhythms.
As one of the first hires on the data team, reporting into the Chief Operations Officer (with support from the interim Head of Data), you will have the opportunity to play an integral role in the setup of the foundations for future success. We don’t have any data models built in Snowflake yet, so expect to have to get your hands dirty in the first few months and be involved in the SQL from the raw data layer - don’t worry we will support you along the way!
As an early-stage business, you can expect your role to develop over time. However, some of the types of things you could be getting involved in are:
- Partnering: Partner with your data peers and the wider business stakeholders to ensure we effectively respond to high-priority needs with clear outcomes. You will need to expect a mixture of ad-hoc work and developing data products which enable us to scale.
- Enabling Self-Service: Develop high-quality insights and visualization products utilizing technical skills and data storytelling principles that allow users across the business to engage with and understand data about a specific topic better without requiring the direct support of a data professional.
- Implementing Metrics: Help to design and implement a set of metrics that summarize performance from company success whilst ensuring that their foundations are reliable.
- Data Champion: Help to push the data organization towards higher performance by working with your data peers on issues affecting impact or process/tooling/data challenges hindering the progress of data scaling and our data culture.
THE TOP 5 THINGS WE WANT YOU TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR FIRST YEAR ARE
- Enable fast and confident decision-making across the business through timely focused analytics. Success will be measured in the time to insight and the proportionate impact of the data insights informing business decisions.
- Implement the metrics that enable stakeholders to observe and influence their and the company’s performance. Success will be measured through qualitative feedback on the suitability of the metrics we use in our reporting and analysis and the actions they have enabled.
- Continuously surface analytical barriers and help us evolve to overcome them. Success will be measured by the absence of recurring themes for improvement in Company-wide retros, surveys, and user interviews.
- Partnering for self-service. All the training, data literacy and support for behavior change needed to make self service learning possible. Success will be measured by being able to have at least one partnering success story where we were able to take someone from directly needing help to self-service via a data product.
- Stretch in the direction of your development goals. Be curious, find your stretch! This could be building better dashboards, developing friendly data, deepening your commercial understanding or learning about data science techniques. It will be up to you to drive your own development and set what success looks like for this through your mastery goals with all the support you need along the way.
WHAT YOU MIGHT BRING TO THE TABLE:
- Demonstrable experience of partnering with the business to be able to produce data, reporting or analytics products, ideally that have automated self-service reporting and learning to support recurring needs.
- Comfortable with SQL (e.g. parsing JSON files, joins, calculations using CTEs etc) in a cloud-based environment (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift). You’ll need this to be able to analyze data until we have time to create our analytics friendly data models.
- Great communicator with good understanding how to implement metrics of success for teams and explaining them to others in easy-to-understand terms.
- A growth mindset, with a hunger for learning and a desire to keep improving your mastery of the craft.
- An entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to thrive in a high ambiguity, fast paced environment that gives you the ownership and freedom to succeed.
HOW WE WILL INTERVIEW YOU:
We try to keep our interview process short and as a small business, we can move through the stages quickly. Due to availability, there may be a change to the order of the interview process, but generally speaking, this is what you can expect:
- Introductory call/interview with Sam, our Talent Partner. The call is usually via telephone and will last around 30 minutes.
- Should it feel like there is an initial fit for all, we will invite you to a video call with Paul, the hiring manager for around 45 minutes. This is a more structured interview and will deep dive into the role and technical needs.
- All of our roles will have a small assessment stage. This might be in person, a take-home assessment or further video calls. Length varies, however, we are mindful that you will have your own work to do and therefore try to keep it as simple as possible.
- Meet the founders and/or other team members. Again, length varies depending on how many people and whether in person or via video call.
